Disappointment in life is something that we just cannot escape. No matter how hard we try or how many times we try to get around it or circumvent it, disappointment is a part of this very thing that we call life. Most of it comes from people you know, people who are close to you, people you have placed your trust in, and/or people who are supposed to be in leadership or guidance positions helping you to navigate through life. This level of disappointment is seemingly the easiest to get over. Why? For the most part, although you trust this person or that person to be everything they said they were or do everything they said they would, there is still a small part inside you that always tries to brace you for the impact of disappointment.
However, how do you respond when you believe you have been disappointed by God? Yes, you read that statement correct. I said “when you believe you have been disappointed by God.” The reasoning behind this statement is simple, it is impossible for God to truly disappoint us due in fact to the very significant factor of Him being omnipotent. This means that He is all powerful and possesses the ability to do as He pleases. Watch this. Many times, we take this to mean that He can and will fulfill our deepest dreams, desires, and wants; however, I am here to serve notice against this notion. In all honesty, His power has nothing to do with making your wishes come true but establishing His kingdom on Earth. He is not a genie that you make magically appear out of a bottle, rather He is The God that is omnipresent among us searching for those who will surrender and submit to His will, His way, and His plan for their lives. When you adopt that mindset (the mindset that I am submitting and committing myself to do His plan), then you understand that everything that I had in mind goes out the window in order to make room for the things He has in store. What do you mean Kean?
He never promised you the big house on the hill, the fancy and fastest car with such great appeal, all the money in the world to improve the way you feel, or the highest paying job that entitles you to every deal. What He did promised is that He would supply all your needs according to His riches and glory by Christ Jesus. Can I be honest? Most of what we call being disappointed by God is the result of us trying to impose our own ideas of our needs upon Him to fulfill or bring to past in our lives. Too much to digest? That’s just a fancy way of saying we get disappointed with God because He doesn’t stroke our ego. I believe this to be one of the reasons why people stray away from the path or God himself. They come to Him with a preconceived notion of who He is and what He will do for them without ever giving thought to the fact that His ways are not ours, thus His will is not ours either (at first). For example, you have someone that will be believing God for a house. They do everything they can to try and get God to seal the deal. They pray about it, sow for it, praise expecting it, and seek claiming it. At what point do we stop and ask, “God not only is this for me, but do you also want me to have this or that thing at this very moment?” Often times, the answer to this question is never, thus we never get our expectations met. So, we backslide or completely turn away saying “that faith stuff or that God stuff doesn’t work!”
The key to understanding that it is impossible to be disappointed by God is first understanding that He cannot fail at anything He does or promises. Check this out. Isaiah 55:10-11 says, “For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Did you catch that? The scripture says that whatever He speaks or sends shall perform as long as it accomplishes that which He pleases. In other words, He does not leave it up to us, rather He takes the initiative to ensure that it performs and establishes His goal for it. If that’s not enough, in the New Testament, Luke comes back around and seals it with a statement about the magnificent power and strength of God. Luke 1:37 says, “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” So, as long as we are walking in the calling, will, and destiny that He has already predetermined, pre-established, and preordained there is nothing that we cannot accomplish. Why? For the simple truth that we are not working to perfect or perform that which gratifies self, rather that which brings glory to Him. Furthermore, once He sees us operating in this manner, He fully invests and backs us unto manifestation of said promise.
In short, disappointment may happen and be experienced as a result of the human nature of people that we have in our lives. However, when it comes to God it just is not possible. Submit yourself to the things of Him and He shall lead and direct your path. “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding” (Proverbs 3:7). In other words, seek Him for the wisdom you need to achieve His will for your life, but also seek to obtain an understanding of the meaning and/or purpose of said wisdom.
